Cult Center for a Hero-God

South of Limenas, the capital city of the Greek island of Thasos, in the Northern Aegean, is the Sanctuary of Heracles.

The Sanctuary, or Thasian Herakleion, is a temple complex dedicated to Heracles, the famous hero of the 12 Labors.

Born of a mortal woman and the king of the gods, Zeus, Heracles was posthumously worshipped as the god of strength and protection throughout the island of Thasos.

Though very little of the Sanctuary of Heracles exists today, what does remain of the temple complex provides evidence of the unique position Heracles held in ancient Greek religious tradition, as a man whose triumphs in life earned him the reward of godhood after his death.
